Every journey has a starting point. For me, that moment was in Cádiz, the city where I was born, just a short walk from the Playa de la Caleta. Nestled on the southern tip of Spain, Cádiz is one of the most ancient cities in Europe, a place where history, culture, and movement have always come together. Growing up here, I couldn’t help but be inspired by the city’s rich history, its strategic location between Europe and Africa, and its connection to the sea. From the Phoenicians to the modern-day explorer, Cádiz has always been a crossroads – a meeting point for different cultures, ideas, and civilisations. The concept of travel has always been intertwined with this vibrant history.
Cádiz’s unique position as the oldest city in Western Europe has shaped much of my worldview. As the city has witnessed centuries of change, so has it influenced my life. I’ve always been fascinated by its role in history, whether as a port city for the Romans, a strategic naval hub during the Age of Exploration, or a key point of trade and cultural exchange between Europe and Africa. And here, in this city, the idea for Bilingüo – my company dedicated to creating authentic travel experiences – was born. Through travel, I aim to connect people with the rich cultural tapestry of this region.
Marko’s Journey: Walking4Water, Walking for Change
In April 2011 when Mark Spriggs (Marko) came to town. He was just well on his way to complete a feat that felt unfathomable at the time, a remarkable journey, walking from Scotland to Morocco in order to raise awareness about the global water crisis. The project, named Walking4Water aimed to highlight the difficulties faced by communities that have no access to clean water. His journey, which spanned more than 400 days and thousands of kilometres, not only raised funds for clean water but also offered a powerful narrative about the power of movement, resilience, and solidarity. Although his website is no longer functioning, the water crisis is an ongoing struggle to this day, and PumpAid, the NGO to which he allocated the funds from his Walking4Water project, is still working on helping and continues to look for promoters and helpers.
During his visit, Marko handed me a book, Nomad’s Hotel: Travels in Time & Space by Cees Nooteboom. I felt that my own journey was about to change. The book, which explores the philosophical and cultural significance of travel, resonated deeply with me. It touched on the themes of movement and connection that I had always believed in. The author simply starts the book with the sentence: “The origin of existence is movement,” – which holds deeper truths as a destination manager than I have ever imagined.

The dedication Marko wrote inside the book – “Thank you for everything amigo! Blessings to planet Loco!!” – was not just a gesture; it was a reminder of how travel connects people, regardless of where they come from or where they’re headed. It was this moment that led me to understand the deeper purpose of my own work in the travel industry.

Marko’s journey took him from the tranquil Loch Lomond in Scotland, through England, France, Spain, and finally to Fez, Morocco. Along the way, he walked through iconic locations such as Stratford-upon-Avon, Paris, Sevilla, and Cádiz. His journey was a testament to the transformative power of travel, both physically and spiritually. The act of walking through cities rich in culture and history was not only a way for Marko to raise awareness, but it also connected him to something larger: a global movement toward social change.
His own profound inner drive took him on routes that are forever famous as personal and spiritual destinations all over the world. When Marko set out for his walk, he never planned for his destination to be as far as it ended up being, but as he was walking the Camino de Santiago, he had the opportunity to reflect deeply on his experiences. It was there that he decided that his journey would be far from over; he was right in the middle of a personally enriching, epic adventure of a lifetime.
The Camino de Santiago: A Personal Journey of the Soul
The Camino is more than just a physical journey – it’s a spiritual one. Like Walking4Water, the Camino is about connecting with something larger than oneself, whether it’s the landscape, the people, or the journey itself.
The Camino de Santiago and Ruta de la Plata have both been key to Marko’s and my understanding of the deeper meaning of travel. As someone who has spent years travelling professionally – visiting golf courses, organising events, and meeting people from all over the world – I’ve learned that travel is about more than just moving from one place to another. It’s about the personal transformation that occurs along the way, the lessons learned from the people you meet, and the experiences you share.
Growing up in Cádiz, I was always surrounded by stories of explorers who sailed across the seas to new lands.
The Spirit of Cádiz: A City of Movement and Connections
Cádiz is a city that embodies the essence of travel, not just as a physical act, but as a way of engaging with the world and understanding our place within it. For centuries, it has been a point of connection between different cultures, from the ancient Phoenicians to the explorers of the Age of Discovery. The city’s geographical location, at the crossroads of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, makes it the ideal symbol for the spirit of movement and exchange that defines my approach to travel.
The Bay of Cádiz, with its breathtaking views and historical significance, is where Europe meets Africa, and where the waters of the Mediterranean mix with those of the Atlantic. This unique positioning has made Cádiz a city of convergence, where different cultures, traditions, and ideas have met for thousands of years. It is from this rich historical backdrop that I draw my inspiration for Bilingüo – a company designed to foster cultural exchange and connection through the transformative power of travel.

Cádiz is a place that offers much more than its stunning beaches and historical landmarks. The city’s true beauty lies in its idiosyncrasy – the blend of cultures that defines its character. From its flamenco music to its sherry wine, from its Moorish architecture to its Carnival celebrations, Cádiz is a place where the old world and the new coexist in harmony. This is what makes it so special – not just for those who visit, but for those of us who call it home.
For anyone interested in history, culture, or simply experiencing something different, Cádiz offers a unique journey. Whether you’re walking along the beach at La Caleta, visiting the Catedral de Cádiz, or exploring the old town, you’ll find that the city’s magic is in the details. Its streets are filled with stories – stories of explorers, of sailors, of conquerors and traders who have come and gone but left a mark on the city’s soul.
This spirit of adventure and curiosity led me to leave Spain in 2001, first to Newcastle Upon Tyne, then to Germany, and later to various countries across Europe. Each of these journeys taught me something new about the world and about myself. It was this sense of curiosity and the desire to connect with others that ultimately led me to create Bilingüo – a company that blends my love for languages, cultures, and travel.
A New Beginning: Bilingüo and the Power of Movement
Bilingüo was born from the same principles that have guided my life: the belief in the power of connection, cultural exchange, and the transformative nature of travel. Just as Cádiz is a city that embodies the convergence of cultures, Bilingüo is a company that brings together the best of cultures, languages, and experiences, offering travellers a unique opportunity to connect with the world in a deeper way.
Bilingüo is not just about offering travel services – it’s about creating experiences that enrich people’s lives. My goal is to help travellers discover the magic of places, not only through the places themselves but also through the people and the stories that make each destination special. The vision for Bilingüo is to provide personalised travel experiences that go beyond the ordinary, helping people connect with the essence of the places they visit.
The idea of travel, connection, and the transformative power of movement came full circle for me now. This blogpost is the first in a series of stories that I’ll be sharing through Bilingüo. Each story will offer insights into my own experiences with travel, culture, and personal growth. It’s my hope that, through Bilingüo, I can offer travellers a journey that is not just about the destinations they visit, but the connections they make along the way.
The Journey Continues…
As I continue to share Marko’s journey, my own experiences, and the stories that inspire me, I invite you to reflect on your own path. We are all travellers in this life, whether we realise it or not, and every journey – whether physical or spiritual – offers us the opportunity to learn, grow, and connect with others.
In future blogposts, I’ll be sharing more stories about the Walking4Water project, my travels across Europe, and the experiences that have shaped my vision for Bilingüo. But for now, I leave you with this thought: the journey is always to be continued.
